Kneeling In An Empty Room

By Blane Sheffield

For two years I prayed alone in the same chair, at the same hour, before anyone else in my house was awake. No one saw it. No one thanked me for it. There were entire seasons where I genuinely wondered if it was doing anything at all, other than costing me sleep.

Matthew 6:6 tells a man to go into his room, shut the door, and pray to the Father who is unseen. It is a strange instruction if you think obedience needs an audience to matter. But hidden obedience is the only kind that cannot be faked, and it is the only kind that actually changes the man doing it.

What I did not expect was how much that chair would shape the rest of my day. A man who has already knelt before sunrise carries a different posture into his 9 a.m. meeting, his marriage, his temper in traffic. The room stayed empty. The fruit did not.

If you are waiting for a reason to keep showing up to the empty room, stop waiting. The reason is the household that is watching you leave that room, even when you think no one is watching at all.
